Pre-Trial Group

  1. The Constitutional provisions guarantee to the individual the presumption of innocence until proven guilty and to this effect; such person(s) are not to be punished in that regard i.e. unduly detained. However, people are unduly kept in police custodies and prisons across the country without trial or conviction by any Court of Competent Jurisdiction.
    The need to have a Group that will look into these issues with a drive to finding lasting solutions to these problems, led to the establishment of the “Pre-trial Detention and Prison Matters Group.”
    The team is expected to:
    • Study existing blueprint on pre-trial detention and prison issues with a view to making necessary review(s);
    • Review existing proposal on courtesy visits to stakeholders in the justice delivery sector;
    • Work out proposed prison visitation within the state;
    • Make contacts with the relevant prison authorities towards agreeing on dates for the visit;
    • Design a programme in relation to this mandate for effective actualization of their mandate.
    The coverage area is Akoko South West Local Government of Ondo State.
